What to see in the north of Tenerife: the must-see places to discover

The north of Tenerife offers a different atmosphere from the south of the island. Greener and more authentic, it appeals to travelers who want to discover a more natural Tenerife, between historic villages, volcanic landscapes and hiking trails.

Here are some must-see places to explore in the north of the island.

Once a thriving port destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1706, Garachico is now one of the most charming villages on Tenerife. Here you will discover peaceful alleys, historic convents and the natural pools of El Caletón formed by lava.

This historic town is renowned for its traditional Canarian architecture. Its ancient houses with sculpted balconies, such as the famous Casa de los Balcones, bear witness to the richness of its past.

A historic seaside resort in the north of the island, Puerto de la Cruz has a lively old centre, a traditional port and a beautiful botanical park.

4. Masca and the Teno Massif, northwest of Tenerife

At the northwest end of the island, this volcanic massif offers some of the most spectacular landscapes of Tenerife: impressive cliffs, scenic roads and isolated villages, such as that of Masca, which has become famous for its spectacular setting and views of the surrounding ravines.

5. Anaga Rural Park, northeast of Tenerife

Located in the northeast of the island, Anaga is a wild territory covered with an ancient laurel forest. It is an ideal place for lovers of hiking and spectacular landscapes.

6. The natural pools of northern Tenerife

The northern coast of Tenerife is known for its charcos, natural pools formed in lava by the ocean. They offer unique swimming spots between volcanic rock and Atlantic waves.

7. The volcanic landscapes of the Teide park

Although the Teide National Park is located in the centre of the island, it is easily accessible from the north and is one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in Europe.

8. The volcanoes of northwest Tenerife

In the northwest of the island, volcanic landscapes testify to the recent activity of Tenerife. The volcanoes of Arenas Negras and Chinyero offer beautiful hikes through lava flows and pine forests. These wild landscapes allow to better understand the volcanic history of the island.

9. The forest crown (Corona forestal)

The Corona Forestal Natural Park forms a vast forest belt around the Teide Park. Dominated by the pine trees of the Canary Islands, this protected area is home to many hiking trails and magnificent views of the island.

  1. Discover the local gastronomy in Tenerife

A stay in the north of Tenerife is also an opportunity to discover traditional Canarian cuisine. In the guachinches, these small typical taverns, one can taste simple and tasty dishes accompanied by local wines, after having visited a banana plantation.

The local farmers markets, such as those of La Guancha, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz or Tacoronte also allow you to discover the island’s products: cheeses, tropical fruits, Tenerife honey or even the famous gofio.
