Teide Natioanl Park

Teide, top of the Canaries...and Spain

About an hour’s drive from my guesthouse Un jardín al mar, Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Tenerife’s must-sees. It is home to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain at 3,715 metres. If measured from its base on the ocean floor, it reaches nearly 7,500 metres, making it one of the tallest volcanoes in the world.

Formed around 170,000 years ago on the remains of an even larger volcano, Teide is now dormant — its last eruption was in 1909. The park offers a spectacular landscape of craters, lava flows, and volcanic rock formations with surprising shapes.

There are many hiking trails for all levels, as well as a cable car that takes you up to over 3,500 metres in just a few minutes.

The park is also home to unique flora and fauna, such as the red tajinaste, a striking plant that blooms in spring (early June). Canarian lizards are also easy to spot — and often curious about your picnic! 😋
